Child obesity is one of the most rampant and widespread problems that are affecting both children and adolescents in the country today. It can actually have a major negative influence on your child’s life and growth, especially since it can increase your child’s risk of acquiring a number of health-related problems. Aside from that, your child could also develop certain social and emotional trauma/ problems, making it very difficult for them to live a happy, healthy life.
As a parent, you might feel that you are powerless to do anything about it, but it is actually the exact opposite. There are things that you can do to help your child combat obesity, and allow him to have a better chance at living a healthier life. Here are some things that you could do for him.
1. Breastfeed During Infancy
When your child is still an infant, you can actually reduce the risks of obesity by delaying your child’s introduction to solid foods, and simply breastfeeding your child during his or her infancy. Studies have shown that by introducing solid foods much earlier, your child is more prone to become obese later in life. As they say, prevention is better than treatment, so it is better to prevent obesity, than to try and treat it later on.
2. Proper Diet
One major factor that would help lead to your child’s obesity is the type of food that your child is eating. The unhealthier, fatty, high caloric food your child eats, the higher the risks are of your child becoming morbidly obese later on. Feeding your child with healthy, low-fat, low calorie foods will help make the difference in trying to prevent obesity from happening to your child.
3. Promote Outdoor Physical Activities
One of the hardest things to do nowadays, especially with all the new technologies and toys available in the market, is to get your child to go outside the house and do a little bit of exercise, or any outdoor physical activity, such as playing sports, hiking, biking, and other activities similar to those. Most kids nowadays simply want to stay inside the house and play with their computers, video games, watch their favourite shows on the televisions, and simply do nothing else. One way that you can prevent this from happening is by getting your child to participate in different outdoor physical activities. Don’t allow your child to be too engrossed in his video games and television programs.
4. Make It Fun
One way to ensure that your child would be able to sustain whatever weight-loss program you would put the child on is to make the program more fun to do. You can do this by incorporating things that the child loves, like using physical activities and games that the child loves to do as part of the exercise regime. These little details will make it easier to be able to accomplish your goal, which is to ultimately lose excess weight.
5. Give Your Support
One of the most important things that you need to ensure is that you provide your child with the support that the child needs. The child will experience a lot of problems, whether it is health-related, emotional or social. In order for your child to be able to deal with the obesity, you need to be able to provide the child with all the help the child needs. Get the child to exercise. Feed the child with healthy foods. You could even get into the act and only eat what they eat, and do things that you want them to do as well. This will make things easier for them. As long as you keep your child motivated, you shouldn’t have much of a problem. Do remember, motivation is the key in your fight to control obesity in your child.
