How to stay healthy during a pregnancy

Having a healthy lifestyle is essential for your baby’s health. Engaging in a life of healthy habits that should continue after giving birth, will allow your child to learn healthy habits from you. Being healthy is a matter of having the will power and desire to make the right choices in the foods you eat. Pregnancy is the perfect time to start caring for your body and in the process giving your baby a healthy beginning.

Be aware of the foods you eat. Nutrition is very important to your baby’s development. A pregnant woman is suggest to gain 25-30 pounds. Eating the right foods will ensure you gain the necessary weight without putting your health or your child’s health at risk. Try to eat the following : 2-4 servings of fruits,3-5 servings of veggies,4-6 servings of milk products, 3-4 servings of meat, and 6-10 servings of grain products.

Engage in physical activity. The exercise you practice should be light like walking and yoga. This will help you ease the fatigue and discomfort of a growing baby in your tummy. It will also benefit your back muscles which can start hurting due to your growing tummy.

Get plenty of sleep. Sleeping on your left side which helps your circulation. As you get bigger, walking around might become difficult. Swelling of the feet might occur. Resting will ease the weight off your feet and help with the swelling.

Drink plenty of water. Avoid drinking caffeinated drinks and ,of course, NO ALCOHOL! Avoid any other hazardous behaviors like smoking.

Take folic acid daily to reduce the risk of birth defects. Folic acid can be taken before you get pregnant.
